Sun Jan 11 | Members Only New Year’s PartyThe annual Friends New Year’s Party features refreshments and a presentation by a guest speaker. This Members-only event is free, but you must pre-register in order to attend. The guest speaker for this year’s New Year’s Party is Marta McDowell. Then and Now—a Hunt for Historic GardensIt all started with a "visiting gardens" list, found in the Morris County Park Commission archives, that Miss Caroline Foster drew up circa 1928 for the Garden Club of Morristown. Eighty years later Marta McDowell (and friends) tracked down those properties and a few more for good measure. What did they look like then? Have they survived? Come on this entertaining, informative hunt for the treasures of our garden past. Marta McDowell lives, writes and gardens in Chatham, New Jersey. Her garden writing has appeared in popular publications such as Woman’s Day, Fine Gardening and The New York Times. Following the relationship between the pen and the trowel led Marta to the poet Emily Dickinson. Marta’s book, Emily Dickinson’s Gardens, was published by McGraw-Hill in 2005. Marta also collaborated with artist Yolanda Fundora on a book of images and essays entitled A Garden Alphabetized (for your viewing pleasure). This project was exhibited in December 2007 at the Atrium Gallery at the Haggerty Education Center.
