Private Garden Tours with DIG IT! (NOTE CORRECTED DATE)

(NOTE CORRECTED DATE)

We are going down the shore! The Friends of The Frelinghuysen Arboretum and DIG IT! Magazine teamed up this summer to create some exceptional private garden tour experiences. Enjoy a fun day of touring four spectacular seaside gardens in Monmouth County. These gardens in Rumson and Fair Haven offer a diverse palette of Zone 7 plants.

THE GARDENS

Haven on Shipee's Pond, Fair Haven

This terraced hillside garden on a half-acre with a 100-acre view overlooks a pond and the Navesink River. Enter a courtyard garden with raised beds of trees, blooming shrubs, and perennials. A flagstone path leads through a shrub garden down to a stone terrace where mixed borders, with roses and a profusion of hydrangeas, surround a free form pool with a waterfall under tall trees. The path continues past several terraced gardens with roses, hollies, and herbs down to the dock with intimate views of Shipee's Pond. Around back, a shade garden with potting bench under birch, oak, a Bloodgood maple, and viburnum affords gardener and guests privacy.

Garden of Stories, Rumson

Shrub borders with annuals, perennials, and specimen trees surround a circular drive with a central garden. Lots of hydrangea, day lilies, roses, and Rose of Sharon comprise the pool garden. Other highlights consist of park-like woods and flowering vines that clamber up to the house's second story. Many plants started as cuttings from other places that carry family memories and enhance the energy and drama of this Rumson garden.

Shanley Garden, Rumson

"Spacious, luxurious and manicured" describes this garden dominated by a Mediterranean-style house and grand trees. Atlantic White Cedar with shaggy red trunks greet the visitor. Large sections of intense shrub borders undulate along the property's edge. Shade gardens seem to shimmer with hemlock, ericaceous shrubs, hydrangea, cherry laurel, and magnolia. Urns of bright tropicals decorate entrances and patio steps. A grove of skinny spruce and wide maples is underplanted with curvaceous shade gardens with blocks of hydrangea, holly, ericaceous shrubs, and hosta. A carpet of lawn is the perfect foil for the dark-trunked trees and beige stucco house.

Garden of Green, Rumson

A quiet, humble formality pervades this Rumson garden surrounding the recently-constructed "antique colonial" home. This is a garden of green, of grasses and specimen trees. It is the home of a woman who enjoys the personalities of plants and of osmanthus, her deer-proof favorite plant. Once a nursery, this organically-grown landscape has Norway spruces all in a row. Twenty-foot enkianthus, camellia, stewartia, solid beds of cherry laurel, and patches of fern and holly show the way to "the wild way back."

There is no bus service to these gardens, but we do encourage carpooling with a friend.

*You will receive directions to each garden with your registration confirmation. Staff will be at each garden to assist you. Please do not bring unregistered guests.
